For the Digital Stereo PhotographerTwin cable release for Samsung NX1000 and other NX cameras - use to synchronize cameras for stereo 3d photography
The first picture shows what you will get. Most of the rest are just for information.
Offered for sale here is
twin cable release for Samsung NX cameras
. As you can see from these pictures, the twin remote cable release has two ends with micro USB plugs. These go to the camera's micro USB port. The other end had one switch. By pressing the switch, both cameras fire.
This remote will work for all Samsung NX cameras
that accept a remote cord (to my knowledge, all NX camera even the mini, with the only exception the NX3000 that does not have this remote capability).
Note
: In addition to this remote, I sell mounts, other remotes and other accessories that allow you to use the Samsung NX cameras for stereo photography.
More details about this remote:
There are many different ways to fire a pair of Samsung NX cameras at the same time. I have a blog on this topic (google 3D by DrT blog)
This twin remote is a complete solution. Connect each plug to each camera and fire the cameras by pressing the switch. This remote is a bit bulky (long and heavy) but the cables are of good quality. The switch has a plug on the side (see picture) where you can attach a wireless remote to fire the cameras from a distance. (Be careful and don't use force, it is not very well constructed).
In my opinion, you also need the 90 degree extension cables that I sell on ebay for per pair.. These protect the camera plug and reduce the spacing of the cameras when placed side-by-side and touching. I leave the extensions permanently in the cameras and attach/detach cables to the extensions, not the camera plug itself.
Potential Connection Problems:
With the NX1000 cameras if you turn one camera first, the other one will fire. If you turn one camera off, then the other one will fire. To avoid this, you need to turn the camera ON or OFF at the same time. Well, actually, not exactly at the same time (if turned at the same time only one camera recognizes the remote, in this case unplug and plug back the one that does not recognize the remote). What I have done with my cameras, I have turned the sensor vibration at startup on (a menu option). So I turn one camera on and then wait a second and turn the other one on. This way neither camera fires and both recognize the remote. When I turn them off, I turn both at the same time.
One last but important note
: If you are using auto focusing, you must half press the button (of the camera or the switch) for the cameras to lock focus before pressing the shutter button fully for the cameras to fire. If you hurry, the cameras can focus at different times and synchronization will be off.
Regarding the use of Samsung NX cameras for stereo photography,
I have written several blogs (google 3D by DrT blog). Here is a summary from my point of view and why I have fallen in love with these cameras:
• Lenses come very close together in the z-configuration.
• Good synchronization (1-2ms), including flash.
• Uncomplicated pairing and use of flash
• Large APS-C sensor and RAW files (I use JPEG myself)
• Inexpensive bodies and large variety of lenses (not only Samsung but also 3rd party NX lenses and vintage lenses with inexpensive NX adapters - crop ratio is 1.5x)
Compared to the Fuji W3 stereo camera, I see the following advantages:
• Stereo base closer to normal.
• Better image quality, especially in low light.
• Can use different lenses.
• Better flash (compared to Fuji’s internal flash).
• Can be fired with a wireless remote. (This is possible with the Fuji but only after modification.)
• Can be easily converted for shooting side-by-side for increased stereo base.
Of course, it also has disadvantages
:
• Larger and heavier (but relatively compact and lightweight for the size of the sensors)
• A lot of things can go wrong when dealing with two cameras.
• Processing of the stereo pairs is more time-consuming.
If you have any questions regarding this mount or the use of Samsung NX cameras for stereo photography, drop me a note. I am always happy to discuss this and anything related to stereo photography.
