The Western Electric Universal base is commonly associated with the early sound era.
The late 1920’s and early 30’s saw a large selection of sound equipment introduced to accommodate
the demand from cinema owners, anxious to screen the new ‘talking pictures.
The Western Electric Company and its rival RCA were involved in the development
of the technology which brought sound to the movies.
It was not surprising therefore that the products of these two companies
proved popular at the time.
The Western Electric Universal base was quickly accepted by USA exhibitors and many overseas.
It consisted of a heavy base plate , lower magazine, motor drive and an
optical sound head complete with pre-amplifier for the photoelectric cell.
Early units also included an interlocked phonograph that was
placed at the rear of or directly next to the machine.
It would be a few years while the film industry decided whether
sound on disc or sound on film was the way forward.
It didn’t take long for them to decide and the redundant
turntable was usually discarded in later years.
The cinema operator was left to choose his own picture head and lamp house.
The units offered here equipped with Simplex Projector & Peerless Lamp House
were standard items found in many cinemas of the day.
Both these of these existed in the Silent film world and adapted well to the advent of Sound In the Cinema.
